💭 My Take of the Week
Show up early and show up often. Given the time it takes to gain traction in a B2B go-to-market effort, you must plan to invest a significant amount of effort over multiple months and years. Generally, a GTM motion will not gain full traction for 6-18 months after it begins…yes, that long.
This is especially true if you’re launching a B2B sales team for the first time.
If you’re going to market for the first time with a new product or service, expect 3-6 months of pre-launch activities like performing early customer conversations, getting initial feedback from your users, creating initial founder-led content etc. Then, expect another 6-12 months of early beta testers and iterations on the product. This all takes time.
As an example of how long things can take, I recall when I was 23 years old, working on a political campaign for a local State Representative in Pennsylvania, USA. I met a man at a local event to promote the local politicians. I asked him what he was running for. He said, “Local Judge.” I asked when his race would take place. He said, “In two years from now.” I was shocked. I replied, “Two whole years!? Why are you here?” He responded, “Showing face.”
His point was this: It takes time to establish trust with your target market. Yes, this was not in the context of B2B sales; however, the principle applies that it takes time to win trust with other human beings. Remember, in B2B sales and marketing, we are essentially attempting to win the attention and ultimately earn the trust of the people we hope to sell to. Trust takes time. Brand building takes time. So, show up early and put in the time it takes to be recognizable with your target market. Results will not happen overnight, and you will have to take action without amazing results for a long time. Get used to it. But remember, do not give up, and stay in the game. Iterate when necessary, but don’t stop.
