💭 My Take of the Week
Oftentimes, I’ve believed that what is blocking me is some external force…a competitor, a market, a trend, a bad employee, a difficult client, etc. In reality, what inevitably turns out to be the “blocker” is my own decisions and state of mind.
Over the years, I have adopted a philosophy of radical responsibility. Likewise, I see failure as a good thing and a teacher. With these two ideas in place, I have been able to uncover deep biases, emotions, and limiting beliefs that have held me back.
I wish I had a prescriptive formula to pass on to you to help you “win,” but my journey has not been linear or straightforward. In some sense, I’ve had to surrender to life and let my guides and mentors appear at the right time. I once fancied myself an atheist, but I admit now I have faith, not in a religious sense, but in some aetherial higher power of sorts that seems to offer me guidance. Yet, no stone tablets have ever appeared. I had hoped that clarity and the “right path” would be handed to me by this higher power. But life is not so simple. I have found that the path illuminates as you walk it, and our guides come in subtle whispers along the way. The faith has supported me more in my determination to persist, knowing it will all work out, rather than as a guide on how to proceed tactically.
Yet, if the above is true, several things also must follow:
We must go on a journey. The lessons are not where you stand, but in the wild of our experiences yet to come. So, set out to achieve your dreams and be willing to face the demons that arise. The answers you seek, the hidden darkness within yourself, will reveal themselves as you strive. These revelations will lead to the next level of your game of life, we all play.
To help us along the way, we can arm ourselves with a code of conduct, core values, and core principles. The terrain and arenas will change, but the core principles will remain intact.
My call to action for you is to go on a search for your core values…what do you stand for? Then collect a set of principles and ways of being that will help you operate in this world. Seek a true north and pursue it with all of your might, even if this true north changes over time.
As a starting point, ”love” and “kindness” seem always to be my north star.
