💭 My Take of the Week
Multiple 7-figure businesses later… here’s the insight that surprised me most:
There's an adage that says:
In your 20s, you think it's about the destination.
In your 30s, you think it's about the journey.
In your 40s, you realize it's about the people you went on the journey with.
I can confirm this after 10+ years in business, starting more than 10 companies, failing at most, succeeding with some, and pivoting hundreds, if not thousands, of times.
I can say that what has made the experiences good and bad is simply the people I worked with, regardless of the money generated.
Some of my biggest financial flops have been my greatest relationship successes, while some of my biggest "cash in the bank" wins have left me emotionally bankrupt.
There's an old quote from Steve Jobs where he said one of the things he is most proud of is the team that he created in the process of building the companies that we all know.
My point is this: I really believe, especially in a world of AI, that AI, social media, remote work, and the constant use of phones and technology are disconnecting us, creating a lack of authenticity and intimacy. Everything becomes a hook, everything becomes a sound bite, everything becomes digestible within five seconds.
This is not human connection…it is human manipulation.
I truly believe that, at our soul level, because of our nature as emotional, communal, and societal beings, we need intimacy.
It's the thing I enjoy most: talking with a team member, laughing about something we're doing, trying to tackle something hard, rallying around a big challenge we just overcame, and being creative as a group.
These small moments of dealing with clients or even responding to fun little memes within the Slack chat channel from team members are what create the joy in the long journey that we have to go on.
At the end of the day, I probably will not remember any of the small battles I fought, some of the silly features I developed, or the sales calls I had, but what I will remember is the team I went on the journey with.
As you go on your journey, know that it will be a long one. It'll be fraught with terror and dragons and monsters that you can't even begin to imagine, but just know the people that you go on that journey with are the most important asset that you have.
Your team is your family, and your family is your heart.
